Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page in Memory of our father Richard Evans.
He personally chose two charities for which he would like donations to be made in his memory. One of which is Chance to Shine.
Richard had a love for the game of Cricket. His love began at a very early age, facing bowling from his grandfather in the garden and his father on the beach. In his younger years he would love to play cricket in his local team every weekend, as well as playing socially with friends and family. He was a very dour opening batsman.
As the years went by, he then enjoyed watching cricket regularly at his beloved Lord’s as an avid member of both MCC and Middlesex. He travelled in 2013 to Australia to follow and watch every Test of the Ashes tour with his wife Lizzie.
Richard had a lifelong interest in sporting history, linked to the collection of an extensive personal library. In 2018, he achieved his lifetime ambition of writing and getting published the cricket biography ‘Teddy: The Life and Times of Major EG Wynyard.’ This was after 40 years of dedicated research into this natural sportsman who was one of only five men to play Test cricket and win the FA Cup. Teddy’s contribution to cricket’s golden age and the birth of football is told in the comprehensive and colourful biography.
Richard was keen for all children to have the opportunity to play, learn and develop through cricket. He believed, as does the charity, that cricket helps children to learn resilience, teamwork and respect.
Chance to Shine works in schools to provide children with a brilliant first experience of cricket. They work with the 39 County Cricket Boards across England and Wales to send specialist coaches into schools, once a week for six weeks, to support cricket coaching.
As well as the physical benefits of regular activity, they use cricket to teach children important key life skills that will help them beyond the playground. Through the values of cricket, they teach children about respect and fair play. Cricket is also an effective way to develop skills like communication, leadership and perseverance that will benefit them throughout their life.
