Reclaiming My Voice: A Journey of Resilience and Support
My journey through domestic abuse has shaped not only my resolve to help others in similar situations. Over the last decade I have experienced domestic, verbal, racist, emotional and psychological abuse at the hands of my ex wife's family. This harrowing chapter of my life was marked by manipulation, deformation and despair, eventually leading to a breakdown in my mental health. Through the intervention and support of FearFree, slowly I have begun to rebuild my life, reclaim my voice, and advocate for those who feel silenced.
I have dedicated myself to the ongoing process of healing and self-discovery. Leaving my previous job allowed me to pursue my passion for mental health support, leading me to immerse myself in studies and various therapeutic groups. I have engaged in art therapy, recovery programs, support networks too name a few all of which have been instrumental in my journey. Recently, I completed an Awareness of Mental Health Problems through Kings College London, which has opened the door to a fulfilling new role as a mental health support worker. In this position, I am now able to assist individuals with learning difficulties and mental health challenges, a role that brings me immense satisfaction and purpose.
While numerous organisations have played a role in my recovery journey, I have chosen to support and fundraise for FearFree, the first organisation that extended a helping hand when I needed it most. Referred to them by the police, I found a safe space where I could begin to heal from the trauma of recent events. The aim of my upcoming sponsored tandem skydive, a thrilling leap from 15,000 feet, is not merely to share my story but to raise awareness for others who may be suffering in silence. I want to encourage individuals to speak out and seek support if they feel manipulated or trapped in their circumstances.
No one should suffer in silence,” I often remind myself. It is the voices of victims that must be amplified to prevent further abuse and to foster a culture of understanding and support. The funds I raise will provide support to at least one person who feels silenced, illuminating their path to recovery. Furthermore, I aspire to raise awareness of FearFree as a vital resource for those in need of help.
FearFree has been a beacon of hope for over 30 years, providing life-changing support to individuals who have experienced abuse, sexual violence, and stalking. Each year, they assist more than 10,000 adults and children across Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Bristol, and Devon, empowering them to rebuild their lives free from fear and to cultivate the skills necessary for healthy future relationships.
As the Head of Fundraising at FearFree, Jessica Gay has noted the increasing demand for their services, stating, “Every year we see more and more people and families needing our support. Last year, our referral numbers increased by more than 30%. With costs rising at an incomprehensible rate, we know people are being forced to stay with their abuser through having no other option. Every penny counts in helping us to get people out of harm’s way, help them work through unimaginable traumas, and support them in their recovery to rebuild a life free from fear and abuse.”
I invite you to join me in supporting this essential cause. Your contributions can make a significant difference in the lives of those who feel trapped and unheard. Together, we can create a world where no one suffers in silence and where every individual has the opportunity to flourish. In sharing my story, I hope to inspire others to find their strength and seek the support they deserve. Together, we can break the cycle of abuse and pave the way for healing and empowerment.
