I am running the London Marathon in 2016 in aid of MS Society and there is a touching reason behind this, please read my amazing friend Luke's story........
By Luke.......
This year, Richard has chosen the MS Society as the charity he wishes to raise money for when he runs the London Marathon on the 26th April. But this time he won’t be running it alone.
When Richard asked me to write a little about the charity and Multiples Sclerosis (MS), initially I started trying to put together information about the disease. MS is a horrible condition that affects the lives of thousands of people across the UK. It eats away at the myelin that insulates the nerves in the brain and spinal chord causing all sorts of debilitating problems. There is no cure and gradually gets worse and worse over time. However, I don’t think that this is the point of this message.
The point is that nearly 4 years ago it took away a beautiful, loving, compassionate and eccentric woman called Jane – a mum to three exceptional children (myself included J) with a heart that was open to everyone she knew. She loved a man called Freddie Mercury and was not phased by his preference for other men.
That’s the message that should be written here. I find it hard to talk about how it affects the lives of other people. What I do know is that I would have given anything to stop or even reduce the pain and suffering that my mum endured and how my mum would want more than anything to help those suffering with the disease today.
Anyone who knows Richard will know he’s an exceptional runner. But I couldn’t care less. What impresses me most about this guy is not the size of his calves (which almost look unhealthily prominent), but it’s the size of his heart.
When he said that he was running for the MS Society, I found it hard to take in. Richard was there for our family, including my mum, through the most difficult time of our lives. I couldn’t ask for a better friend.
And when he runs that marathon Jane Redfearn will be by his side pushing him every step of the way – especially because he’ll be wearing Freddie’s tash!
Thank you for reading.
