Bernard after a brave battle with leukaemia passed away on June 20, 2012 at The University Hospital of Wales,
"There is only one word that describes what our Dad means to us and that is “everything”. Throughout our lives Dad has been our coach, chauffeur, driving instructor, swimming teacher, lecturer, advisor, counsellor, painter and decorator, gardener, DIY expert and loving parent. He has always been patient, kind, compassionate and fearless. Constantly giving his time, energy and biggest efforts to make our lives happy without ever complaining.
Dad always thought of others before himself whether it be making efforts to see friends or family, or helping others with jobs and providing support. He was instrumental in starting an annual raft race at Bryn Bache Parc, organising the races, stalls, venues and raising over £4000 for Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Even during his final days when he was seriously ill, a new patient entered the ward in far better health than himself, his comment was, “I will have to cheer him up later.”
He loved his grandchildren Josh, Millie, Ethan and Ffion. Although a traditional man he was the first one who would sit on the floor with the kids, read them a book, play star wars with the boys and dolls with the girls. One of his last requests was to tell the children he loved them millions. Dad they love you millions too.
We will miss Dad so much. He was always on the end of the phone and would practically do so many things but we have also lost one of our best friends as well as our Dad. Since April when he was diagonised with Leukaemia it has been heartbreaking and devastating watching him suffer. However he has been constantly positive and brave in the presence of adversity. It has also meant we have spent hours of quality time with our Dad at his bed side where we have thoroughly enjoyed his company chatting about everything from sport to family.
He was an exceptional, inspirational and beautiful man both inside and out. We love you and will miss you so much." David and Claire Williams (Son and Daughter)
Leukaemia is a cruel disease and Bernard had so much more to give.
I am undertaking the Welsh 15 3000ft Peak Challenge in July 2012 with 3 close friends Conrad Trickett, Guy Kettle and Anthony Davies. It is 30 mile challenge, climbing 15 peaks over 3000ft in North Wales (a total ascent of over 12,000ft) we aiming to complete the challenge within 18 hours and in memory of Bernard are raising money for the Haematology Research Fund of the Cardiff & Vale Health Charity, so in the future we can help find a cure and give hope to people with Leukaemia.
