Rex's story...
In the small hours of Sunday 8th September 2013 Ruth's waters broke and there was meconium in them, so we went to hospital and as labour progressed Rex started to struggle so Ruth was rushed in for an emergency C-section and little Rex was born at 11.48am, all seemed well until we went into the post op recovery ward where the nurses thought Rex looked a little purple until they turned on the lights, they noticed his breathing was a bit off so took him to SCBU for some tests. We were told he had meconium aspiration and would be there for a couple of days.
On Tuesday 10th September we were told how well he was responding and that he should be well enough to go home at the weekend, we were thrilled, however that afternoon we were told that as his lungs were now clearer they could hear his heart and he had a large heart murmur so they did an echo and found he had major heart problems and had to get to a specialist hospital as soon as possible, Southampton were called and they sent up their ambulance, he was sedated and taken straight to PICU at Southampton General Hospital.
The following morning he was assessed and found to have Coarctation of the Aorta (narrow artery), Bicuspid Aortic Valve (funny shaped valve) and a very large VSD (Hole in the heart) he has also been found to have excess tissue in the left ventricle.
He was put on life saving drugs and he had his first corrective operation to patch the coarctation of the aorta to make the artery wider and a band was put on the pulmonary artery to restrict the flow of blood going to the lungs at just 8 days old.
He finally came home with us on the 28th September 2013
Rex returned to Southampton General for his second surgery to close the VSD and have the band removed off his artery on 9th april 2014 and he again had another stay in PICU, they supplied a bean bag and DVD player to make him more comfy. without Friends of PICU he would not of had these items. Please help them help more children have a more comfy and happy stay whilst they are on PICU.
We cannot thank the nurses and doctors on PICU enough so we want to raise some money to help with equipment that without support they would not receive.
Thanks and love Rex's Runners!
