Story

Angela was diagnosed with Breast Cancer aged just 37. Despite all the challenges her cancer presented, Angela never stopped ‘waving the flag’ for HospiceCare and became one of our most passionate fundraisers. Angela said on more than one occasion, that if she could use her cancer to get people’s attention to  raise as much money as she could, then that’s what she would do – right up until she died, she was planning ways of raising more funds for HospiceCare.

Only two weeks before she died, she completed the Great North Run in 3hrs and 53 minutes, with the help of her friends, family and Wilbur the Wheelchair.  The team raised over £2,000.  Angela was also busy writing her story to ‘tell the world’ about her journey with cancer and with HospiceCare.   She said of HospiceCare “they cannot change your journey, but they can hold your hand and support you through the dark times and help you live with your diagnosis.”

Sadly Angela died on 21stSeptember 2014  before she was able to finish her story, the day before her 43rd birthday.  So, to carry on the fantastic work that Angela started, we have picked up the baton and have set up the Angela Matthewson Legacy Fund  -  in Angela’s words “please donate to this fab local charity  - I would have given up a long time ago without their support.”

Two years down the line, lots of fantastic people have raising money for HospiceCare to keep Angela's Memory alive and help others.  There have been two fantastic Garden Parties, a Quiz Night, proceeds of a Carol Service at Wooler.
