Liz passed away on 9th August, 2020. She had glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) - grade 4 brain cancer. She was virtually symptom free and was still working and playing golf in the weeks before her diagnosis. She was strong, she was fit and otherwise healthy and she was too young. The timeline from her diagnosis until the day she passed away was 12 weeks. It's a brutal disease.
As Liz’s family, we are supporting the work of the Tessa Jowell Foundation. This Foundation is working to achieve equal access to excellence for all brain cancer patients. This is being delivered through the creation of a national network of Tessa Jowell Centres of Excellence. These Centres provide access to the most promising and cutting-edge innovations in cancer treatment, as well as offering a consistently high levels of care and support. The Tessa Jowell Foundation is working to help as many NHS hospitals as possible in their quest to become excellent in the treatment and care of their brain cancer patients and, vitally, these Centres are being used as a road map to deliver universal excellence in cancer care for all cancer types.
We'd do anything to have Liz back. We didn’t know that brain cancer is the biggest cancer killer of children and those under 40 in the UK, we do now. Improving the outcomes, options, experiences, and care of those who will get this disease makes us hope that her loss will not have been in vain.
