Story

THE CHALLENGE

To cut a long story short, Sam was interested in this year's OMM and needed a race partner. When Sam decided to give buy an entry for his (unsuspecting) sister's birthday present this year, the dream team was born.

This is Sam's third OMM and Rebecca's first. The latter loves running and military fitness classes, but has never competed in anything further than a half marathon...

The OMM was created in 1968 to allow those who love the mountains an opportunity to test their abilities. The fundamentals of the event are self reliance, route selection, moving quickly over difficult terrain, kit management, endurance, teamwork & sound mountain judgement.

We are taking part in a points-based score course where the team with the most points accrued over two days wins. We have a time limit of 5 hours on the first day; four hours on the second, over a 400 sq km course area, with camping overnight. We are required to carry all our kit with us. In the OMM's own words, there will be no paths; no visibility and no mercy.

THE CAUSE

This year's OMM is revealed to be taking place near Largs in coastal Scotland. This is a unique event celebrating the very best of Britain's great outdoors and natural beauty. We hope to be able to enjoy these natural environments for many years to come, and we also look forward to having the opportunity to improve our urban environment too through a cause like Keep Britain Tidy.

Keep Britain Tidy is an independent charity with three goals – to eliminate litter, end waste and improve places. This means more to us than just picking up litter. It means creating clean beaches, parks and streets. It’s about working with people, businesses, organisations and public bodies to care for the environment on our doorstep. We fight for people’s right to live and work in places they can be proud of and prosper in.
