Its been a year since my dear Nan (Eileen Weeks) passed away from Dementia related illnesses. The loss to myself and my family has been and still is totally devastating.
Nan suffered with Vascular Dementia/Alzheimer's for nearly 3 years before she passed away. In that time we saw how quickly this awful illness took hold of what was once a very strong, independent and funny lady and gradually made her so dependent on others that she couldn't complete the simplest of tasks like feeding herself or dressing herself etc. The most heartbreaking times were when she couldn't recognise me or others close to her.
So many of us are having our own lives effected by loved ones suffering from this disease. Often this leaves us feeling saddened and helpless. Therefore this has inspired me to do my bit and make a difference to others, hence, taking on this challenge of a lifetime to trek the Great Wall of China.
This challenge involves trekking approximately 70km spread over 6 continuous days. I will be walking partly on flagstones of various conditions which includes many steps on the wall and partly trekking on paths through woodland and farmland, some days trekking for 7-8 hours so lots of training will be involved!
I have never done anything like this before so this is a HUGE challenge for me. All I ask is that my lovely friends and family dig deep and give generously to this worthy cause as you never know when and if we may need the services of the Alzheimer's society!
I'm funding the trip myself. All your donations will go straight to the charity. Lets all make a difference.
Thank you so much for your support.
