Story
I am running this race this year in support of the unit that was looking after my darling husband Shaun Fisher last year at the time of the Great North Run. 3 days before last years race Shaun had a massive heart attack and went to hospital on 4th September. He first went to Lancaster then to Blackpool and finally landed up in the Cardio Thoracic Critical Care Unit at Wythenshawe Hospital very late on the 5th September. This unit is a leader in the treatment of conditions using ECMO - a support system that helps the heart rest and recover. Unfortunately for Shaun the ecmo system could not make his heart better and he spent three months on a bivad system getting better and stronger until he was able to have a heart transplant. This happened in early December but things didn't go well. By Christmas we thought we had turned a corner but soon in the new year Shaun succumbed to infection and was taken by that on 4th January. We have all been devasted by the loss of such a great man - a real fighter and such a good human being.
In the 4 months that Shaun was in the intensive care unit we were always impressed with how things were run and feel that his care was excellent. I am also aware of the huge cost of the treatment Shaun had - and would like to try and raise some funds to pay a little back. Hence this run. One of Shauns colleagues from work Richard Haley is also running and raising funds on this page for CTCCU.
