Story
The Honeypot Children's Charity is the only charity in the UK to provide respite breaks and on-going outreach support for young carers. Honeypot gives them a break from demanding and stressful responsibilities at home and provides a safe, nurturing environment where children at risk can develop their full potential.
Young carers are children under 18 years who provide care and emotional support to a parent, a grandparent, or a sibling who is ill, disabled, suffers from a mental health conditions or substance abuse. Honeypot is the only charity in the UK that is solely dedicated to supporting young carers between 5-12 years, and every year they are able to reach almost 2,500 children across the country to provide relief, help protect their mental health and grown their confidence.
Having to adopt a surrogate adult role at home, alongside homework and school, is unbelievably tough. Some children are as young as five when they start helping to give medication, complete household chores and assist with personal care. Although still children, they find themselves in a caring role 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Young carers often find it difficult to make friends with their peers, as they have a limited amount of shared experiences and many young carers are bullied at school as a result of their responsibilities at home.
