As you may know, on the 27 May 2012 I am once again taking on the challenge of running to support Breakthrough Breast Cancer, by competing in the Edinburgh Marathon Team Relay with three of my fantastic colleagues from the Western General Hospital.

 

As a breast cancer surgeon I am well aware of the devastating impact of the disease on thousands of women across Scotland, which is why funding Breakthrough’s work is essential.

 

In 2010 and 2011 I ran the Great North Run and Great Scottish Run half marathons, which were hard work but a fantastic experience, and the support I received was incredible. Last year I was delighted to be joined by a running team of ‘Mike’s Marvels’ - former patients, their relatives and friends of all ages who took on the challenge to run with me - and we raised over £21,000.

 

I would be so grateful for any support you could give. All of the money raised will help Breakthrough continue to save lives and change futures throughout Scotland and fund my work with the breast cancer research unit in the Western General.

 

Your support was invaluable and we were overwhelmed by your generosity. Yet there is still a long way to go! So far I have raised over £35,000 through incredible support, and I’d love to be able to reach the £50,000 mark this year to make a real difference to everyone affected by breast cancer. That means raising another £15,000 this year – with your help I know I can do it.

 

I would also be grateful if you could ask anyone you think might like to run with me to sign up to join my running team ‘Mike’s Marvels’. They can enter their own relay team of four people and run alongside me on the day. The more team members we have, the more money we can raise to improve detection, diagnosis and treatments for everyone affected by breast cancer.
