VNA strives to improve health equity and reduce health disparities with high quality, accessible, and compassionate care delivered in VNA health centers, community settings and patient homes. Federally funded community health centers (CHCs) provide affordable healthcare options to more than 28 million people in towns and cities across the U.S. The clinics are designed to improve access to primary care services regardless of whether patients have insurance, speak languages other than English, or live in remote areas.

Stephanie Broderick, a VNA nurse practitioner and midwife, saw an obstetric patient throughout her pregnancy who revealed in her early visits that she was very committed to having a natural birth experience at home and preferred to avoid receiving vaginal exams. The patient expressed that she had a previous experience with abuse and that this birth plan was very important to her due to this trauma. She was very thankful that her VNA midwife assisted her in developing a birth plan that accounted for her individual experiences and needs. This allowed her to put all her focus on herself and her baby during the delivery. During her labor, with the help of relaxation techniques, breathing, walking, and bouncing on a ball, she naturally delivered a healthy baby boy.
