In June I will be volunteering for 10 weeks in Southern India as part of an International Citizen Service (ICS) development programme. The programme is designed to bring young people together from both the UK and India to fight poverty and make a difference where it is needed most. In a country whose growing population is second only to China, a staggering 80% live in rural areas where they suffer huge inequalities; 30% live below the extreme poverty line, 31% have no access to sanitation facilities. During my time there I will be living in the heart of a rural community, conducting surveys to establish what key issues need to be addressed, building infrastructure such as eco-sanitation units and cow sheds, setting up health camps and committees, teaching children environmental awareness and the importance of hygiene and most importantly educating the community on how to maintain the work so it genuinely creates lasting change.

I need to raise £800 for Raleigh International who are one of the respected development agencies that deliver ICS. This will allow them to continue to bring about positive change in the developing communities where they work. I will be doing a number of fundraising activities, the main one being running my own half marathon, all of which I will keep you updated on. The most i've ever run is 8miles so this is a great personal challenge. You can keep track of progress here on my JustGiving page. Any contribution you make will go straight to the charity, not towards my travel costs or living expenses, and will make a real difference to the lives of people in developing countries, so please dig deep!
