Kiwoko Challenge, Uganda · 20 August 2011
Why Uganda?
Why a half Marathon?
Why Now?
When, years ago, I went through my first mid life crisis and took up running I had a romantic notion to run on a few continents and Africa was always going to be the des sables marathon or the Comrades race in South Africa, but they still remain a level of training away from me.
In fairness I've done so little running since 2009 that it's just a memory now and only bloody mindedness gets me into running kit, not muscle memory (oh and just to clarify it's Kate's bloody mindedness not mine).
So with two years away from running and a lovely evening celebrating the Aspen ISIS relationship that is now four years old I found myself volunteered for the Kiwoko Challenge, a race so simple it has to be done.
We will set off from the Maternity ward that Aspen helped to build at the Kiwoko Hospital that has been ISIS's base in Uganda, and run a half marathon. I'm told that I will be beaten by young lads the age of my children, running barefeet. I doubt that there will be a huge amount of official water stops and likely very few onlookers.
Kate visited Kiwoko before the maternity ward was built and in so doing became a film maker.....It's not very good but in 2008 you tube was a very exciting thing!

So, I was fat, unfit and short on challenges. Running is a wonderful way to feel good about myself and help others too. I ran the New York marathon in support of ISIS in November 2008 and I am proud to say that I have loved trying to support them doing their work in other ways. Now I will get to see the place where the work is actually done and I can't wait.
Your money goes to ISIS, I'm paying my way out.
