Story
Many of you may or may not know that my other half, Steve Hulse had a liver transplant in March 2016 which saved his life! A year on and he is back to normal leading a very active life.
As a result Logan Crawford, Cheryl Granville, Julie Whales, Phil Payne and myself (Philippa Wells) are cycling the Coast2Coast route from Whitehaven to Tynemouth on 7th to 9th June 2017. We will be cycling a total of 140 miles, the first two days climbing rather a lot of hills and the final day, hopefully freewheeling all the way down to the sea at Tynemouth!!
We are raising money for a Liver Perfusion Machine at Addenbrookes Hospital, which can pump oxygenated blood through the liver once it has been donated prior to transplanting. http://www.organox.com/
Research suggests that many more livers would be able to be used for transplant - currently around 400 livers are wasted each year as they cannot be accurately assessed or kept out of the body for long enough. Also, around 100 patients die each year whilst they are waiting for a transplant. Hopefully the use of this machine will drastically reduce these figures.
