Story
Hello and welcome to my page - this is my story.
As a teenager I lost my mother to brain cancer. At this time, the understanding of brain tumours was very minimal and still, due to woeful underfunding, research and treatment has not greatly improved. In fact, survival rates remain very low – just 20% of those diagnosed with a brain tumour survive beyond five years, compared with an average of 50% across all cancers, whilst another stark fact reveals more people die of a brain tumour under the age of 40 than any other.
Despite this, brain tumour research is still seriously underfunded, receiving just 1% of total national spend in cancer research. I want to support this cause by helping accelerate research in the knowledge that each day of research brings us one step closer to a cure.
How am I going to do this?
As an offshore sailor I will be attempting challenges in some of Earth's most hostile oceans. Through these challenges I want to communicate the importance of research and at the same time raise funds through races and record attempts.
Funding raised will go to the Imperial College Healthcare research group, one of four UK Centres of Excellence in Brain Tumour Research. I have met with the scientists there and found them to be incredibly bright individuals and importantly, they are very passionate about their work. Each day of research costs £2,740 at each Centre of Excellence, so we are initially aiming to fund a minimum of 1 day through the Record attempt.
It would be incredible if we could raise multiple days of research. Please do consider donating to this very worthy cause to help find a solution to brain tumours.
Many thanks
Phil Sharp
