Story
Dr Peter Brian Kirkwood
02/02/1988 – 04/05/2021
A devoted husband, adoring father, treasured son, beloved brother and loyal friend.
Taken too soon, in a fall on the slopes of Mt Taranaki, New Zealand.
His family came first, but the mountains were central to Peter’s life, and he died doing what he loved. At only 33 years old, he leaves behind his wife, Kerrie Ann, and their 7 month old daughter, as well as his mother and father, Katrina and Paul, and his siblings, Beth, Matthew and Edith. We are all heartbroken beyond words.
As thanks to the brave efforts of the mountain rescue team who found and helped retrieve Peter and his colleague from the mountainside, and in the hope of, in some small way, helping them to help others in the future, we welcome donations in Peter’s honour to the incredible work of Taranaki Alpine Cliff Rescue (Inc).
It may have been too late for Peter, but if anyone could have saved him, it would have been these people. Please consider giving something, however small, to try to help others and prevent further deaths on the beautiful but treacherous slopes of the mountains Peter loved.
Taranaki Alpine Cliff Rescue (Inc) is a non-profit organisation which provides a specialist service to assist Police Search and Rescue. Their small group of trained personnel carry out alpine and cliff rescues - the scope of which is beyond normal Police Search and Rescue work.
They are usually called out for rescues above the snowline on the beautiful Mt Egmont/Taranaki on the North Island of New Zealand. They specialise in ropework, rescues from cliffs and helicopters in difficult terrain.

Your donation will support their continual needs for equipment and training.
Donations to this small organisation will be routed through The Manor 2056 Trust, a family grant making charity. The trustees are cousins of Peter Kirkwood. The bank and other charges on overseas transactions make it more effective for this trust to make a single donation to Taranaki Alpine Cliff Rescue than for individuals to make donations directly. The Trust will transfer all the funds raised by this Just Giving web page, including UK Gift Aid on eligible donations.
We, Peter’s family, want to say a massive thank you to everyone for their donations, to Taranaki and Ngai Tahu Maori iwi (tribes), and to all our friends and wider family, who have shown us so much love and support at this difficult time.
