I recently volunteered to be a telephone friend to an elderly person though the AgeUK telephone friendship scheme.  My new friend is a lovely man and he inspired me to run the great north run for charity.  I’ve been talking with him for nearly six months now; our weekly conversations are so rewarding and I know he gets a lot out of it too.

I lost my dad when I was just 28 years old and now I am older I realise how much wisdom I’m missing out on and how much someone with 70+ years of life experience can share.  I’d recommend being a telephone friend to anyone if you have a spare hour per week.
