Story

Hello,

The Jive Aces are playing live in Wimbledon on Thursday 29th September 2016.  Licensed bar, Selection of Curries available, a fantastic venue 10 minutes from Wimbledon or Raynes Park Stations, and served by the no 57 and 131 bus along Worple Road.  Post Code SW19 4LU.  Email: Jitterbugsw19@virginmedia.com for more information or to be added to the reservation list.

If you haven't seen them perform: around London, at UK festivals or on Britain's Got Talent - then heading down to Wimbledon is a must!  The Jive Aces are a lively and energetic  swing band - and excel in entertaining a crowd - they are great to dance to, but if dancing is not your thing then come and enjoy an amazing atmosphere, a curry and a drink with some great people!

I am doing this in memory of Louise Zanre da Silva and to raise awareness of the work of the JRS.

Louise Zanre da Silva was the Director of the Jesuit Refugee Service in the UK.  I first met Louise at a Jesuit Parish's conference many years ago, I listened with interest to the stories of many of the people she had helped.   Her testimony opened my eyes to the plight of those seeking asylum and refuge in this country and the many obstacles they face.

Sadly Louise died in February this year, at a very early age of 47.  She was suffering from  a rare rheumatoid condition when I met her, was in pain and unable to stand upright.  Her passion and example through work, to help those so desperately in need, has left a legacy which continues today in the Jesuit Refugee Service.

Your money goes directly to the people in need and it will transform their lives; your donation however small will make a real difference:

  • £5 will cover the costs for a hygiene pack a month for 1 person
  • £24 will pay for a day bus pass for 6 persons
  • £40 will provide an emergency hardship grant for 2 persons
  • £100 will contribute to an educational grant for 1 person (towards the course fees or textbooks).

Sarah Teather, the former Liberal Democrat MP, who now continues Louise's work as director, said: “The most striking thing for me was the generosity of Louise’s love and service. She cared deeply for the refugees, volunteers and staff and was profoundly loyal.  She set quite an example to follow.”
