Story
WHAT IS IT?
We are proposing to walk virtually from “Home to Rome” this Lent - please join us!
The event will start on Wednesday 2nd March and run until Thursday 14th April and every footstep will bring us closer to our goal!
We will start at St Philip’s school, then head to Canterbury, the Kent Downs, through Northern France and the Champagne regions, on to and over the Swiss Alps, culminating in Rome, Italy.
The route of 1,383 miles/2226 km, will bring us together as a community to raise money for our chosen school charity, Carney’s Community Centre.
VIA FRANCIGENA
The Via Francigena is one of the oldest walking pilgrimage routes in Europe. The historic route was recorded by The Archbishop of Canterbury, Sigeric the Serious after receiving his pallium, or cloak of office, from Pope John XV in 990 AD. It takes pilgrims from England, through France, Switzerland and finally Rome.
Rome was traditionally the place of martyrdom of the two saints most closely linked with the founding and establishment of the Roman Catholic Church – the Apostles Peter and Paul. Through time, Rome became a focus of holiness where believers could come closer to God, and receive benefits, both physical and spiritual.
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
We are aiming to raise funds to support Carney's Community - which helps disadvantaged young people from all backgrounds and works with the most at-risk young people. Recipients benefit from mentoring, support and a wrap-around service; focusing on education, employment and personal development. Please do read more about them on https://carneyscommunity.org/
HOW WILL WE ACHIEVE THIS?
We need everyone to get involved in order to achieve our target- you record your mileage, whether it is walking, running or cycling using Strava, Fitbit, Garmin or manually logging onto the UltaBritain Webpage. We will be able to track our progress through the UltraBritain website to see how close we are to our goal destination.
