Story
Originally from Hartlepool, Tony arrived in Hull aged 15 to join its thriving fishing fleet as a deep sea trawlerman. His first accommodation in the city was at the Fisherman’s Mission in West Hull.
Upon leaving the fleet in 1979, Tony became a steel erector, working firstly back in his native north east and then across the country on various projects and in the expanding offshore industry. His experiences as a fisherman then a steel erector motivated Tony to become a Health and Safety professional. A career he relished for some 30 years.
Tony “The Legend” Sweeney was well known across the Humber Bank and beyond. At Saltend Chemicals Park he was renowned for his efforts to safely deliver many projects on every plant currently standing on the park, (and some no longer in existence) including his latest endeavours on the Tricoya wood acetylation project.
As a beloved friend and colleague, Tony worked hard to ensure new thinking surrounding the Tricoya technology met established best standards of delivery; not least for health, safety and environmental performance. Tony looked after us and helped us all to keep safe and stay healthy.
Tony was adamant that we could set our health, safety and environmental practices to the best international standards. As a parting gift to the project, Tony delivered on the project achieving ISO certification. Although Tony was known for his occasional quip, when it came to it, he delivered.
His quips weren’t just reserved for work. Tony enjoyed the repartee and wit of his many friends in the social setting of the Hedon Inn in his adopted town, where he would regularly hold court and enjoy the good company provided by those friends. “The Legend” has gone, but he will not be forgotten by those who knew him.
Tony sustained his mariner interests, including his owning of the Three
Grey Mistresses and association with The Fishermen’s Mission. So, in his memory, we have arranged a collection for The Fishermen's Mission.
