Story
Last week, our dear friend Andreas Mann dialled NHS111 about severe pain in his back. Four days later, he started chemotherapy at Barts Hospital to treat a 9x11cm germ cell tumour. We are all optimistic that Andreas will be among the large proportion of people who fully recover from germ cell tumours. However, we are not so optimistic we will recognise him without his bountiful beard.
Nick Williamson, an Advanced Nurse Practitioner with more than 20 years of beard experience (and whose wife has never seen him without a beard of some description), immediately offered to remove his own beard in solidarity.
And he is not alone. Consultants, nurses, psychologists, administrators and physiotherapists throughout the Pain Management Centre (where Andreas works) have offered to discard their own facial hair - from the ludicrous to the luxurious. And in the case of Vince, both.
All people are welcome to grow and remove hair this Monday evening, regardless of workplace, or even gender.
