Story
As the Editor of Optician magazine I have taken part in a sporting event every year for the last ten years to raise money for vision-related charities.
Optician has worked with Blind Veterans UK for a couple of years and this year it is celebrating its 100th birthday. BVUK provides vital support to servicemen and women injured on duty and those who have served their country at some time in the past.
Over the last few years I have taken part in cycling events but thought the challenge of a Half Ironman distance triathlon was just about within my capabilities before old-age really sets in.
Blind Veterans UK is a really practical charity, have a look on www.opticianonline.net, for a review of its centre at Ovingdean near Brighton. I'm sure every penny donated will be used to improve the life of someone who has served their country but now needs help themselves.
THE JOURNEY
Embarking on a half Ironman distance triathlon is no mean feat so I have been taking things a step at a time. Having not swum for a couple of years I started at the Guildford lido in March. It soon became clear that my wetsuit is on its last legs so I decided to go trunks-only. Not only would this toughen me up I thought, but the added buoyancy of the wetsuit would be a boon on the day.
Having started in March, I can, only now just about leave the pool without need of medical assistance. It's still an hour or so before I can feel my fingers.
Running decent distances (over 10Kms) is also a discipline I have had to re-introduce myself to. I like running in the countryside, this didn't start too well.
I invested in some off-road shoes but on one of my first outings I suffered a fall and was out of ( running)action for a fortnight.
I like to think of the bike as my safe leg but again I have had to up my distances in readiness for the Fambridge triathlon. I've been enjoying the Surrey hills and had some pre-breakfast rides down to Worthing safe in the knowledge that the event course is flat.
Thanks you for taking an interest in this venture.
