Story
In July, as life was settling into the “new normal” for most, I was diagnosed with testicular cancer (TC).
As a doctor myself, I knew that the prognosis was good. But that didn’t stop me from facing a huge amount of uncertainty. A cancer diagnosis of any kind is devastating news which carries questions like, “will I need chemo,” “What surgery will I need,” and, “will I be able to lead a normal life again?”. A diagnosis of TC also carries concerns about fertility (the offending nut has to go) and given that it usually strikes before or at a time when most men are building families, this can be a very real concern. There’s also the question of “what if”. What if you are one of the 2% who don’t achieve a cure, or if you need major surgery?
Thankfully, It’s In The Bag provided amazing information packs with plain English answers to all the worrying questions in my mind, which allowed me to focus on getting better and enjoying time with my family.
So, whilst I’ve always had a laugh at November taches, this year I’m joining in, hoping that I can raise a bit of cash to give back to IITB and also raise a bit of awareness.
A 30 second check in the shower once a month could save your life.
From IITB:
Grow a Tash for Its in the Bag Cancer Support It's in the Bag is a charity providing support for men with testicular cancer in the South West. It is run by a group of testicular cancer survivors with support from specialist NHS staff. It provides social events, courses and information. They have three aims: to offer support both to men and their families from diagnosis to survival, and the healthcare professional teams looking after them; to raise awareness of the disease with the aim to save lives; and survival. Testicular cancer (germ cell) is 98% curable and the charity also offers volunteering opportunities.
