Story

OKA and the Trussell Trust

Founded by three close friends, OKA is a business built on community. We are more aware than ever before that life’s ‘simple’ pleasures – such as sharing a good meal with family and loved ones – should never be taken for granted, so to mark our 21st birthday, we are beginning a charitable partnership with the Trussell Trust.

Supporting two thirds of the food banks in the UK, the Trussell Trust’s commitment to working with its network to put food on the table for people locked in poverty is a cause that resonates with OKA’s core values. We plan not just to support its immediate COVID-19 relief efforts, but to provide long-term support for everything the Trussell Trust does in campaigning for structural change in the UK.

How Can You Help?

We have set an initial goal of raising £20,000 for the Trussell Trust. Every pound you donate we will match, until we reach our target of £20,000 together.

As soon as this page reaches the £10,000 donation mark, OKA will match that sum to hit our £20,000 target.

If you would like to help, and feel you are in a position to do so, we would be grateful for any donation.

  • £10 could help give a parent peace of mind that their family will not go hungry tonight
  • £20 could help support someone take their first steps out of poverty
  • £50 could help us give more people a place to turn to in times of crisis

About the Trussell Trust

The Trussell Trust supports a nationwide network of food banks to provide emergency food and supplies to people locked in poverty, and campaign for change to end the need for food banks in the UK.

Right now, more than 14 million people in the UK, including 4.5 million children are living in poverty. The Trussell Trust supports more than 1,200 food banks across the UK to provide a minimum of three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food to people in crisis who have been referred – for instance by advice services, GPs, social services and schools – as well as support to help people resolve the crises they face.

Between April 2018 and March 2019, food banks in its network provided a record 1.6 million food supplies to people in crisis, a 19% increase on the previous year.

How the Trussell Trust helps

The Trussell Trust knows it takes more than food to end hunger. It brings together the experience of food banks in its network, and their communities, to challenge the structural economic issues that lock people in poverty, and campaign for change in the UK. It is working with its network to end hunger in three ways:

  • Emergency food - supporting food banks to provide emergency food to people locked in poverty.
  • More than food - helping food banks provide compassionate, practical support to tackle the root causes that lock people into poverty and build people’s resilience so they’re less likely to need a food bank in the future
  • Creating change - bringing together evidence from hundreds of communities across the UK to challenge the structural issues that lock people into poverty and campaigning for long-term change to end hunger in the UK.
