Thanks for taking the time to visit our North Sea Crossing Guinness World Record attempt JustGiving page.
Ian Castro and Simon Worsley both from Norfolk attempted to break the Guinness World Record for paddling non-stop across the North Sea in a double kayak. The crossing was a total of 87 miles and began at Southwold Harbour on Saturday 4th July 2009 at 03.00 and ended at the marker buoy at the entrance to Zeebrugge Harbour in Belgium at 20.53.
They both live locally and decided to use the record attempt to raise money for a local charity and have therefore decided to donate any money raised from sponsorship to Palliative Care East (Palliative-care-east.org.uk)
The charity is raising money to provide a palliative care centre for local people in the Great Yarmouth and Waveney area. The centre will bring together first class clinical care, complementary therapies, psychological and spiritual support, and practical advice on social care and financial matters.Palliative Care supports patients and families whose lives are affected by incurable illness such as cancer and motor neurone disease. A holistic approach to care helps patients and families come to terms with the situation and to live out the time that remains as fully as possible.
Simon Worsley and Ian Castro completed the North Sea crossing in a time of 17 hours and 53 minutes. Despite difficult sea conditions the 'boys' have knocked over two hours off the previous Guinness World Record of 20 hours and 7 minutes. Establishing the intrepid duo as the new world record holders (subject to verification).Very choppy seas across the whole journey made the crossing extremely difficult for the 'boys' and no doubt there will be a few stories to be told!!
I hope you will join me in congratulating Simon and Ian on completing a supremely challenging marathon crossing of 17 hours and 53 minutes.
Please, please help them to raise money for palliative care east to maximise their achievement.
