Story

Why Mission Rabies?

One of the few things I remember from my Freshers' week at uni 40 years ago is being shown a film of a young boy suffering in the final stages of rabies infection. It was a harrowing piece of film that has stayed with me all these years.

Sadly rabies kills at least 70,000 people each year, 40% of whom are children under 15 years old. 99% of cases are caused by dog bites and yet are entirely preventable by the vaccination of dogs in high risk areas.

Mission Rabies' aim is to eliminate dog mediated human rabies deaths by vaccinating canine populations and educating communities.

I will be taking part in a two-week vaccination project in Tanzania in January 2021. Other than £350, which must be raised as a charitable donation, the costs of the trip are self-funded.

Anything you can give towards the donation target is very much appreciated.

Thank you. Nick.

A bit more about the charity

Mission Rabies is a UK-based charity and international NGO working to eliminate rabies by 2030. Despite being 100% vaccine preventable, rabies causes at least 70,000 human deaths annually, most of which are children. We are going to change this.

Following World Health Organisation guidelines, Mission Rabies run mass canine vaccination drives and educate local communities on rabies prevention in India, Malawi, Sri Lanka and Tanzania. Our results speak for themselves with the number of human rabies deaths falling every year.

Rabies needlessly kills 59,000 people each year. This needs to change. Following World Health Organisation guidelines we run mass canine vaccination drives and lifesaving education programmes to help people protect themselves against rabies. What we are doing works, but we can't do it alone.
