Story
Those struggling to conceive face one of life’s most stressful situations. Often the only option is to consider complex options such as IVF. We provide such treatments at Newcastle Fertility Centre @ Life but there are still lots of things that could be improved in this treatment that will increase our understanding of why the problems occur and maybe improve treatment outcomes.
• We have research projects that are looking at developing new technologies to improve the culture system for embryos. This has already resulted in an improvement in the pregnancy rates.
• We carry out studies which are working out why women have more problems conceiving when they are older.
• We carry out studies in which we interview patients to find out how they cope with their problems and the treatments they receive so that services can be improved.
• We have established a specialist service for men with fertility problems and are developing new treatments for them.
• We are developing new treatments that use the techniques in the IVF lab to help those who have other medical problems such as mitochondrial disease.
Although some of our research is funded by bodies such as The Wellcome Trust and NIHR, we always need extra support.
Thank you.
