Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
As I am sure most of you are aware my Grandma passed away, aged 90, in late Feburary, after being diagnosed with cancer, among other illnesses. She was a woman you couldn't help but love; stubborn, friendly, (very) chatty and worldly wise (well more war wise than anything else) with always a story to tell (normally one which most of the family had heard 2 or 3 times before but it didn't matter). However most importantly she was one of the most generous people I have ever known, supporting a wide variety of charities throughout her life time, because in her words "they are all such a good cause, why shouldn't we help them".
This is one of the reasons why I would like to raise money through doing an activity which I love. Even though my Grandma did not experience the generosity of Marie Curie Cancer Care herself she was always a strong believer of wanting to stay in her own home right up to the end. In fact I have never met someone so adamant not to go into a nursing home. She felt being surrounded by her own things in a familiar environment with her family around her was the best possible way.
For this reason I want to support Marie Curie Cancer Care in her name so that people, who unlike my Grandma, cannot afford the level of care they require, can receive the invaluable support the charity provides for people with terminal illness and cancer, free of charge, so that they too can continue living in their own homes right up to the end.
Never did I think when I came to university that I would be excited about cycling up to 600 miles (the equivalent of cycling from Lands End to just past Glasgow in the UK) through France with only a few items of clothes, a sleeping bag, a cooker and a tent, in only 12 days between the 8th-21st June! I am cycling this route with my friend Alice Duley, from university, so I won't be completing this challenge on my own. I enjoy a challenge and definitely think that this ticks that box. I was always referred to as the 'sporty one' by my Grandma so it seems only fitting that I complete something sporty in her honour and use this chance to help raise money so that other people can get that little bit more out of life.
Please give what you can to this valuable cause, if like me you know someone who has been affected by cancer or terminal illness and feel that they too would value the support of Marie Curie Cancer Care. All the money raised will go directly to Marie Curie Cancer Care.
