My Nannu,(John Doneo Snr MBE), was one of the most amazing people you could ever meet. Alongside my Nanna (Moira Doneo MBE), they dedicated their lives to helping others by fostering children for over 50 years.

On 19th April 2023, Nannu was reunited with his beloved wife in heaven following a battle with lung cancer. We sadly lost Nanna in March 2022 and he took great pride in raising money for the British Sjogren's Syndrome Association in her memory. We would like to continue raising money for this charity to spread awareness and help others in the process.

Sjogren's Syndrome took her away from this world too soon. It is a chronic autoimmune disease where the white blood cells in one’s body attack their moisture-producing glands – namely tear and salivary glands. There are as many as ten million people worldwide living with this disease. Unfortunately, it was caught too late as there isn't enough awareness around.

The disease was first identified in 1933 by Dr. Henrik Sjogren. Sjogren’s syndrome occurs across all racial and ethnic groups. General awareness about Sjogren’s syndrome is still lacking, even among physicians.

Sjogren’s Syndrome Facts

  • Sjogren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disease.
  • Sjogren’s syndrome involves inflammation of glands (in particular glands within the eye and mouth) and other issues of the body.
  • About 90% of Sjogren’s syndrome patients are female.
  • Sjogren’s syndrome can be complicated by infections of the eyes, breathing passages, and mouth.
  • Sjogren’s syndrome is typically associated with antibodies against a variety of body tissues (auto antibodies).
  • Diagnosis of Sjogren’s syndrome can be confirmed with a saliva-gland biopsy.
  • Treatment of patients with Sjogren’s syndrome is directed toward the particular areas of the body that are involved and toward any existing complications, such as infections.
  • Sjogren's syndrome is one of the most prevalent autoimmune disorders.
Nanna and Nannu would not want anyone else to suffer with this horrendous disease. Please donate what you can to the BSSA (British Sjogren's Syndrome Association) to help raise awareness of the disease and support research into its cause and treatment.

Let's continue their legacy and turn the heartbreak of losing them both into something positive. Your donations ensure they can continue helping people even though they are no longer with us.

Thank you

About the charity

Sjögren’s Syndrome is debilitating, distressing, under recognised and under treated. Glands that produce tears and salvia or secretions of the vagina, skin and bowel stop working, it causes muscle or joint pain, low mood and extreme fatigue. The BSSA supports sufferers and raises awareness.
