Story

#bethehope for Max by joining us in the fight against A-T!

Max is a fun-loving, smart, loving, ornery 13 year-old. He is a little jokester with a great sense of humor. He loves playing Nintendo Switch games and board games. Max enjoys watching YouTube and playing on his iPad. He also loves traveling, swimming, kayaking, and McDonald’s! He got an Amazon Echo for his 13th birthday and he loves giving orders to Alexa, like asking her to play Queen or Journey.

Max also has Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T). A-T is a rare genetic disease that attacks children, causing progressive loss of muscle control, immune system problems, lung disease, and a high rate of cancer in children and young adults, shortening their lives. Imagine a disease that combines the worst symptoms of muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, immune deficiencies, and cancer. Children with A-T are usually confined to wheelchairs by age 10 and often do not survive their teens. Because A-T is a multi-system disease, scientists believe that A-T research will help more prevalent diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, AIDS, and cancer.

Max has been using a wheelchair for two years and it helps him immensely. Max is so cool and, as long as it doesn’t involve needles, he just goes with the flow. In fact, he takes most things in stride. When he stopped being able to dip and eat his own chicken nuggets, he didn’t mind relying on mom or dad to help him. He is proud of who he is and revels in the attention he gets from everyone around him.

While Max will maintain his sense of humor and intelligence, he’ll have a hard time living a “normal” life due to all of the symptoms associated with A-T. He now requires full-time care. We must raise awareness and support research to find a cure and develop therapy and treatment for A-T.

Please help us try to find a cure, or even treatment, by giving whatever you can using the 'Give Now' button. The more people who know about the A-T Children's Project, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing my page with your friends and family. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
