Milton Keynes Islamic Arts and Culture(MKIAC) is a charitable organisation based in Milton Keynes, but with both national and global reach. We are a Queens Award recipient. The main objectives of MKIAC is to use the arts to overcome societal division and to actively promote community cohesion. This need was felt acutely after the 9/11 event, which led to the founding of MKIAC.
The broad spectrum of MKIAC community arts initiatives has continued to gain traction, since its inception, with positive experiences of engagement, that resonates with people keen to learn a bit more about Islamic arts. Beneficiaries gain new skills through attending arts workshops where they work closely with artists, learning, calligraphy, animation/film making, mosaic construction, tapestry to name a few examples. MKIAC works collaboratively with local schools and organisations. This union led to a pioneering project with Bletchley Park, where students from local schools worked with an artist, using the theme of coding, binary numbers, with Islamic art inspired images. A digital light display ran at Bletchley Park, using its building for the projection of the art, in an amazing night time show.
The annual Art in the Park festival has attracted visitors from far afield for the weekend event, in their thousands. Subject to Covid restrictions, large gatherings such as this cannot go ahead. However, MKIAC are working on an online festival, using national and international artists and performers. It is in the spirit of adapting during the pandemic, that MKIAC has created an online art gallery. MKIAC have hosted a series called Art in Isolation – live online spoken word events, attracting writers, poets and musicians.
MKIAC is proud to announce that we have been chosen as one of two charities by the incoming Mayor Mohammed Khan of Milton Keynes. We very much appreciate the recognition by Mayor Khan of the continued commitment by MKIAC to serve our community through arts and cultural engagement. All funds raised will go towards, facilitating, further arts projects (particularly arts materials). We actively encourage you take the opportunity to visit our web page and see the impressive variety of projects achieved to date www.mkiac.org
