Story

Michael Hanlon, also known as Mike, Mikey and more recently Milo, was a gifted and talented water sports instructor and newly qualified RYA yachtmaster. Possessed with huge energy and passionate about the water and any sport connected with it; he excelled at teaching, especially children who loved his energy and acute sense of fun. His enthusiasm and kindness were infectious, gaining him many friends both young and old.

In September 2012, after several seasons working in both his beloved Windermere and overseas instructing summer and winter seasons with Mark Warner and Neilson, Michael was awarded sponsorship by Seafarers UK to complete a three year yacht cadetship, UKSA in Cowes.

After successfully completing his first phase of training, which included gaining his yachtmaster offshore and completing his first year of a foundation degree with Plymouth University, Michael secured his first position on board a superyacht as deckhand and water sports instructor.

Michael died tragically on the 7th April 2013 in the south of France whilst just starting out on the career of his dreams.

On behalf of Michael’s parents Bob and Fiona, and his sister Claire, UKSA have created the Michael (Milo) Hanlon UKSA Fund in Milo’s name. This fund is in place for young people like Michael; people who are passionate about the water and who love sharing that passion, but who couldn't normally access or afford the training they need to get started. Funding will be available for young people entering into entry level courses in yachting, hospitality, engineering, watersports and UKSA’s Cadetship programme.
One of the key philosophies of the bursary is that any monies granted will be paid back into the scheme by the recipient.

After the tragedy of his death, we all want his energy, extraordinary character and life, celebrated and remembered. By creating this opportunity young people will be able to walk in his footsteps onto exciting and challenging careers.

In order to do that we need all the help we can get. If you feel able to contribute directly then please use this page; you may alternatively wish to organise events or choose UKSA as your charity of the year.
