Story
My partner Craig sadly passed away on 2nd October 2021. The support of Jersey Cancer Relief allowed us to spend his final months together and make precious memories that I’ll treasure forever. Myself, Craig’s Mum Marion and some very good friends are climbing Ben Nevis on the 2nd July 2022 to raise money for this amazing charity.
At the end of January 2021 Craig was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer - desmoplastic small round cell sarcoma. He started a very intensive course of chemotherapy in March which was only available in the UK while Craig and I were based in Jersey. We didn’t want to be apart but we wanted to keep our apartment and life in Jersey as we were hopeful that one day Craig would be well enough to return. This is where Jersey Cancer Relief came to help. They paid for our apartment for three months, allowing me to move to Edinburgh to be with Craig. When he was feeling better from his treatment we went for an amazing road trip to the Highlands where we went to Ben Nevis (Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Scotland, the United Kingdom and the British Isles. The summit is 1,345 metres above sea level). As he was still weak from his treatment we could only walk up a few kilometres but we promised each other we would come back the following summer and go all the way to the top.Tragically Craig passed away on 2nd of October 2021 leaving this Highlands road trip to be our last holiday. In memory of Craig and to raise money for this amazing charity I still want to climb Ben Nevis this summer so some incredible friends and Craig’s mum have volunteered to help me with this challenge.
About the charity:
Jersey Cancer Relief are a local charity in Jersey offering non-means tested financial support to adults with a cancer diagnosis.
Jersey Cancer Relief came into being in 1968, initially as the Jersey branch of the national campaign, when it was found that some cancer patients and their families were finding it difficult to cope financially because of their illness. It was incorporated as a Jersey charity in November 1973. Since then, due to generous donations and our own fundraising efforts, it has been possible to offer assistance to many people.
