Story
In 2016, a group of educated parents supporting young adults with serious mental illness in Edmonton came together to host a workshop called Love You Forever which was attended by 100 family members of adults with Serious Mental Illness. This catalyzed the formation of an education and advocacy group called Families Supporting Young Adults with Serious Mental Illness (or FAMI for short). FAMI was involved in many important projects in Advocacy and Education locally and provincially. Through the first and subsequent Love You Forever workshops and other workshops many families shared their stories. A common theme amongst the families’ stories was a sense of being vital supporters of their loved ones yet not receiving important information about their loved one’s condition and how it was best to help them. Many of the young adults suffered psychotic spectrum disorders.
The concept of a curriculum offered to the family carers as a normal part of care for young adults with psychosis began to evolve. After more than three years of collaborative work between FAMI members, AHS, University of Alberta researchers and other consultant professionals in Alberta and abroad, an evidence based, skills focused, 9 module curriculum was developed and launched as a pilot program in May 2022. The curriculum will be offered to 100 family participants over the next 2 years and the family outcomes will be studied using scientific method.
FAMI is supported by the Canadian Mental Health Association, Edmonton Region and serves as a key link between the clinical, academic and family based communities that work collaboratively to improve the health of young adults who live with serious mental illness and their families.
