Dublin Marathon 2012
Fundraising for Barretstown (UK)
Fundraising for Barretstown (UK)
Hi guys,
I first became involved in supporting Barretstown 4 years ago when I came across an article on the GSK Intranet looking for volunteers...and have never looked back! When I decided I was crazy enough to run another marathon... there was no other charity I wanted to support.
Over the past few years, I have spent many weekends at the Barretstown camp in Ireland, supporting both family and bereavement weekends as a volunteer Cara (Irish for Friend) for those who are unfortunate enough to have been affected by, or lost a child due to serious illnesses – primarily cancer and serious blood diseases. I have seen first hand the amazing work Barretstown does, and the lasting impact it has on families.
Barretstown was founded by Hollywood actor Paul Newman in 1994 and modelled on his renowned Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Connecticut, USA. They serve children from Ireland, Britain and throughout Europe, and their families.
All of the children and families come to Barretstown free of charge. Everything, including accommodation, food, medical assistance and round-trip airfares are provided at no cost to the family. Barretstown is supported by donations and the fundraising efforts of corporate supporters (including GSK), individuals and community groups.
For further information, please see their website http://www.barretstown.org/
If you are supportive of the work that Barretstown does, or my effort to run the marathon, please support by leaving a donation.
Many thanks in advance for all your support - Barretstown and I are truly grateful!
Maddy
