Story
Beams is a local charity that supports disabled children and their families. The children and young people who access their services will typically have one or more learning difficulties, complex health needs, physical or sensory impairment, challenging behaviour, Autism or severe ADHD.
They offer (amongst other) the following support
1. Family advice service: telephone advice line, parent support groups, home visits, crisis support, -1 meetings, parenting programmes
The areas they help include: health, education, transport, mobility, financial matters and emotional support for parents.
2. Short breaks (a range of leisure activities for disabled people up to the age of 25 years) these include: specialist holiday schemes, inclusive play schemes, day trips, after school clubs, family support, family fun events, etc.
3. Celebratory parties, siblings clubs;
4. Dragons Retreat Short Break Unit – a residential children’s home providing overnight care as a short break for children and young people up to the age of 18; and
5. Direct payments service – a country – wide service that helps the parents purchase their disabled child’s assessed support needs.
