Story

Thank you for choosing to donate to this fund. We would like to raise funds for Stoke Mandeville Hospital High Dependency unit.  In your comment when donating please quote: Fund 2046 Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU). This will help us ring fence funds within the larger charity pot for Lyn's specific collection.

In lieu of flowers, we would like to raise funds to buy an Optrel Mask in Lyn's memory. These are the special helmets with their own filtered air supply, that we had to wear when we were able to visit Dad to say goodbye. Whilst he was still conscious there were only 2 masks available, we had to choose who did not go to see him. We feel that it would be a positive thing in Lyn's memory if another family did not have to make this decision. He would have liked so much to help others.

Dad was always running ahead of you trying to anticipate what you might need and getting it sorted before you even realised you wanted it. He just wanted to be kind as much as he could possibly be. It was so important to him.

In his last days he agreed to be part of a research project looking at the titration of oxygen on ventilators. With links to how the body survives at high altitude we found a certain poetry in this, given his love for mountaineering. In better times he would have been fascinated by the outcomes of this study. Dad understood he was unlikely to survive but felt it might help to save others. This is the measure of the man we love and why we feel fundraising for the HDU is so important.

This value of kindness was reflected by the staff on Ward 7 and in HDU. Their consistent compassionate communication with us through out, told us what we needed to know about their care for Dad. They really did try everything in their power. Should we raise more than needed for the Optrel Mask, we will consult with the ward how else they think extra funds might be helpful for them.

We have had so many great tributes and reflections about Lyn which we have found so supportive to read. Good friends, Judy and Alan described him well. "Lyn was a people person, full of joie de vivre and bonhomie, who revelled in good company, good conversation and good food. He was a Europhile, linguist, reader, gardener, not to mention a walker who really enjoyed the great outdoors".
