Story
After running the London Marathon last year for Stand Against MND I was going to take a bit of a back seat this year and just pootle along and do my own thing.
Then Sam contacted me and asked if I wanted to be part of his fifty/50 crew.
You see, 50% of people diagnosed with MND are not expected to live more than two years so Sam decided to get 50 people to raise a minimum of £500 each for the continued research in to finding a cure for this awful condition. .
A couple of year ago, I was privileged to provide follow up commentary as Sam Perkins crossed the line of Outlaw Half Triathlon. Supported by his crew and OSB events, Sam achieved One Last Tri and last year decided last minute to raise funds for Stand Against MND as Sam and I took part in the London Marathon.
Sam’s story has had a long lasting impact on me. I was lucky to speak with some of his family and friends over the weekend at Outlaw and their support and positive attitude was inspiring.
I was left realising that this illness can happen to any of us, at any time and seeing everything he has achieved whilst been really poorly has undoubtedly influenced my attitude towards taking opportunities and ‘having a go’
That, a quick chat with The Husband and Sam telling me that if I joined his fifty/50 crew I could attend his birthday party has inspired a new challenge!
This year I have decided that one event isn’t enough! This year, starting in February, each month for 6 months, I will complete a half marathon distance, my final half distance will take place on the weekend of Outlaw Full, the event I first met Sam and where others from the OSB Family (including my children!) will also be raising funds for Stand Against MND
This will be a personal challenge for me to build and maintain fitness over a long period and dare I say, get back to where I was fitness wise around 11yrs ago! It will help me return to healthy habits and raise much needed funds at the same time.
Please take the time to read Sam’s story below and donate at any time!
