Story
Aubrey says: “Hi, I’m a ten year old boy from Chichester, and my plan during the summer is to pick up litter around Sussex. I don’t know how many bags I’ll get, but every time I go for a walk I come across loads of litter. I’m aiming to fill at least ten bin bags of litter by the end of the summer, but it may well be much more. Please sponsor me! My target is to raise Five Hundred Pounds! It will go to the Sussex Kelp Restoration Project, to help make sure the seas around our coast are less polluted and more healthy for people and wildlife.
“I will collect at least 10 bags of litter over the summer. I am asking for a kind donation of £15 but I’d be grateful for any amount of money – whether less or more!
“If there is a lot of litter, I’ll keep filling up bags. But you just need to pay once.“
The Sussex Kelp Restoration Project is a pioneering marine rewilding project which has been launched to restore almost 200 square kilometres of lost kelp forest along the coast of Sussex.
Kelp is the name given to a group of brown seaweeds, usually large in size, that are capable of forming dense aggregations known as 'kelp forests'.
Historically, kelp was abundant along the Sussex coastline. But this important habitat has diminished over time, leaving just a few small patches and individual plants, mostly in shallow water and along the shoreline. Through the Sussex Kelp Restoration Project, the Sussex Wildlife Trust are working to bring back this critical marine ecosystem.
