Story
As many of you know, Lisa did a lot to raise money for the British Skin Foundation, including a cycle to Paris last September. Skin disease took over her everyday life. She knew more than anyone how consuming skin disease can be. And so we have chosen this charity because we know she supports it and we have the hope that, despite all that's happened, some good can come from this and we can prevent others from experiencing what she did.
We just want to fill you in very briefly on what has happened in the past few months:
Lisa was diagnosed with Mycosis Fungoides on 17th March, after years of misdiagnosis and failed treatments. Mycosis Fungoides is a very rare type of cutaneous T-cell Lymphoma blood cancer, where the T-cells effect the skin. She began total skin electron beam radiotherapy at Guy's Hospital in London the following week. However, her treatment was put on hold when she tested positive for Coronavirus and had staphylococcus bacteria, a septic infection, in her blood. When she did restart the radiotherapy, she wasn’t able to finish because was admitted into St Thomas’s with another septic infection. After a few weeks being in St Thomas’s she was taken into ICU and put onto dialysis and a ventilator to support a failing kidney and pneumonia and put into an induced coma to prevent further organ failure. She got through this and was working on getting home. The biggest challenge was of course her skin which was severely deteriorating day by day. On top of this was building her strength back up, even taking a couple of steps a day was a success. Whilst facing other small infections, she managed to keep going and was determined to get home. And so, after weeks of strength and fighting, on the 6th July, she was brought home in an ambulance. It was amazing to have her home. But the next day she took a turn and we had to call 999. The paramedics were amazing and offered to take her back to London as the skin care she required was only available in St Thomas’s Hospital. After arriving back in London in A&E, they discovered another septic infection and so she was put into ICU again on strong antibiotics. The next day the infection count was falling and so she was moved to the high dependency unit and things were looking good, they continued to look good for a few days. But on the 10th we got a phone call saying she had seriously deteriorated over night and was in a coma, on life support and back in ICU. Thankfully, Danny was allowed in to see her and stayed by her side from early evening on the 10th until we lost her at around 2:30am on the 11th. It was another septic infection that took over and no antibiotics had any impact. With her skin being so bad, she had no layer of protection from any infection, and so even if she had beaten this one it is extremely likely that she would have got sepsis again. Her coming home made no difference, this would have happened that night either way, we are just thankful we got a night with her after months of being apart and she got to see her family.
She fought this for months and the strength she has shown will forever astonish us. Earlier diagnosis could have prevented this and so, we ask that you help us in raising money for the British Skin Foundation to push earlier diagnosis for others and help prevent anyone else having to go through this.
We want to thank all of our friends and family for the support during the past few months, we felt it and Lisa felt it.
She can now rest peacefully and most importantly, pain free.
