My Story

Many of you who know me will already know that I completed a sprint distance triathlon in September last year.

This involved completing a 400m pool swim, followed by an 18km bike ride, followed by a 5k run.  I managed to complete the triathlon in 1hour 44mins which I was really pleased with!

The feeling I had crossing the finish line was incredible and, together with the massive increase in my fitness that the training gave me, this has spurred me on to want to achieve more in this fantastic sport.  So I have signed up for a number of triathlons this year but the main event is:

The Event

Nokia Windsor Triathlon on Sunday 13th June 2010

This is an Olympic Distance Triathlon and involves:

Start off with a 1500m open water swim in the River Thames (eek!), then

42km bike ride, then

10k run.

So this is over double the distance of the event I completed last year!

As this is a major challenge for me I see it as a great opportunity to raise some money for a couple of charities that are close to my heart.

The Charities

1. Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust (registered number 1128354) which is the leading charity dedicated to adult and childhood brain tumour research in the UK. The aim of the charity is to raise awareness, support and funds for brain tumour research to help fight this devastating disease and give hope to brain tumour patients in the future. I have chosen this charity because a close family friend, Jodie Adams, very sadly passed away on 8th December 2006 from a brain tumour and her family and friends have been working extremely hard since to raise as much money as possible to enable other sufferers and their families to receive as much help and support as possible.

2. Macmillan Cancer Support (registered number 261017) focuses on improving the lives of people affected by cancer. The charity provides practical, medical and financial support and pushes for better cancer care.  Unfortunately cancer is increasingly common and my husband's family has been heavily affected by this disease over the past couple of years.  Macmillan have been extremely supportive during this time and I am keen to raise some money to try and help other families who may unfortunately have to deal with this terrible illness.

Making a donation

I have set up two pages (one for each charity) for the event and would be so grateful for any donations received, even small amounts can make a massive difference. If you want to split your donation between the two charities then this will be much appreciated but unfortunately you must make a donation on each page. You are currently on the SDBTT page - the Macmillan page can be found here: http://www.justgiving.com/Lisa-Denton0

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
