Story
On Friday 14th February we were contacted to see if we could assist with a young saluki x boy found roaming in Lincolnshire and handed to the dog warden. Casper had it seems been abandoned with a broken leg but more disturbingly the leg had been broken for around 2 weeks and was hugely swollen and painful. Here at Greyhound Gap we pride ourselves on doing what is best and immediately agreed to transfer him to our orthopedic specialist Alan Mayo at Nantwich Veterinary Hospital. Luckily Gaps founder had actually headed to Lincoln from Friday the 14th until Sunday 16th for a short break so was able to travel him back and have him hospitalised herself. Unfortunately at time of surgery it was found that the break was much worse than originally thought and the surgeon had to spend all evening cutting back and resetting bone whilst adding plates pins and rods in. Thankfully he was able to fix it and it is expected to heal just fine you can see from the x ray he has done an absolutely amazing job considering what he was up against. Some may say why no just amputate? For anyone who has lived with a young lurcher they will know just how fast, daft and clumsy they can be. With 3 legs should another leg break in the future there is then nowhere to go. We genuinely believe that a fixable limb should be given that exact chance.
Caspers surgery costs were originally estimated to be around £2000 but sadly due to the severity and time spent in theater that has now increased to £3000. Casper has received the surgery and is now at the veterinary hospital for a couple of days to be monitored. This has of course been a drain on our resources so any help received towards the cost of Caspers operation no matter how big or small will be appreciated. With aftercare we expect the costs to rise to around £3500 but £500 has already been kindly donated.
Regular updates on Caspers recovery will be placed on the facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/352291034157/
