Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Fred was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2017, when he was 69, the doctors gave him 4 months to live if he didn't have the cancer removed. He was told the operation was a risk as the surgeons hadn't done this extensive surgery before. They would have to remove his voice box, all the throat tissue and lymph glands then take a graft from his arm and rebuilt his throat so he could swallow. Fred said it was a no brainer and would have the operation. The operation took 16 hours and he ended up staying in hospital for 9 weeks due to his slow recovery. He had a box implanted in his throat so he could speak by pressing a button. Surprisingly it sounded very close to his voice not like a robot. The operation was a success. He was looked after extremely well while in hospital, we couldn't thank the staff in the ENT ward enough at Preston hospital.
Unfortunately due to other health issues Fred became very ill in February 2020.Sadly he passed away on the 7th May 2020.
If my dad hadn't of had the operation my mum and myself wouldn't have had those extra 3 years with him.
Please donate so the treatment of throat cancer can hopefully become less intrusive.
