Trailwalker 2017 · 28 July 2017 to 30 July 2017 ·
Meet Light Planking. We're made up of Fiona Fox, Siobhan Ferns, Hannah Sturdy and Magdalena Kupczyk.
In July 2017 we will be taking on the Trailwalker - 100km over the South Downs in under 30 hours. That's nearly two and a half marathons all in one go!
We're doing the Trailwalker in aid of the Gurkha Welfare Trust, a brilliant organisation which aims to provide welfare to enable Gurkha ex-servicemen, their dependants and their communities to live their lives with dignity, primarily in Nepal but increasingly in the UK and elsewhere. See https://www.gwt.org.uk/why for more information on who they are and what they do.
The Gurkhas are an extraordinary group of soldiers who have fought loyally alongside the British Army for over 200 years. Though their right to retire to the UK has just been won, there is still much work to be done to ensure their rights to retire in comfort.
In 1965, Gurkha Lance Corporal Rambahadur Limbu, 10th Princess Mary's Own Gurkha Rifles was awarded the Victoria Cross for exceptional heroism, self sacrifice and a devotion to duty after he ran into enemy fire to carry his wounded colleagues back to safety. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rambahadur_Limbu for his incredible story.
Rambahadur Limbu's story is so very special to us because Foxy's father was with him in that action, providing artillery support while Rambahadur continued to rescue his men. Col Douglas Fox MBE MC (and the original Foxy Sr.) is an Honorary 10th Gurkha - and will be waiting for us at the finish line on July 30th 2017.
Siobhan's grandfather, Cpl. Alfred O'Hara also served alongside the Gurkhas during his time in the Armed Forces. If not for the absolute bravery of the Gurkhas our families served with, half of our team would likely not exist today.
For all they've done for us, in 2017 Light Planking is going to do our very best to give something back. With your donations we can help make a better life for Gurkha veterans and their communities.
Light Planking has already committed to a tough training schedule and the team is working so hard already, from hauling themselves up St Catherine's Hill in the middle of the night to playing diary-Tetris to fit regular training in around already busy lives. We are also lucky enough to have the best Support Crew in the world lined up to get us over the finish line.
The Gurkha Welfare Trust and Brigade of Gurkhas works tirelessly with Oxfam to put on the Trailwalker every summer and the money raised is split between the two charities.
From all of us - thank you for your support.
