Story
For many years now, I have been aware of people trafficking. When, yet again, there is a report on the news media about another young woman lured from desperate conditions at home into a more wealthy country on the false promise of a job through which she can earn some money to help her family, give her kids a better future or whatever - only to be forced into prostitution by those who have posed as her helpers but who then betray her in the most egregious way; of men and women eager to better themselves, lured to a country full of strangers who speak a language they don’t understand and whose police they fear only to be forced into slave labour; of children enticed away from their desperate parents on the false promise of jobs only to be thrust into the hands of paedophiles… I am frustrated at my inability to do anything more than feel moral outrage.
No amount of outrage will save a single abused woman or child facing the repeated nightly visits of men with lust in their eyes; of thin, abused, hungry people seeking a way out, desperate for someone, anyone, to recognise their need and help them instead of abusing them.
I have been filled with a sense of helpless despair. What can I do to help? How can I turn my anger and frustration and outrage into something practical?
And then I heard about Hope for Justice.
And I realised that, where I as an individual can’t do much to help a single abused and vulnerable person, here is an organisation, a group of people who can.
By raising money for Hope for Justice, perhaps just one child can be saved from the grubby hands of the paedophile, just one young woman can be set free from repeating, night after night, repeated, loveless, sex acts at the hands of hard-eyed and unfeeling men.
You can too. Please will you help in some tangible way - because I have no doubt that you feel as disgusted and frustrated and outraged as I do and are looking for something practical way of helping.
On my ride across Russia, I have chosen Hope for Justice as the charity that I'd like to raise money for.
