Many of you will know that my new job involves working for a charity: the National Literacy Trust, yet you possibly do not know too much about the work we do. 

Did you know that by the time children first start school, those from poorer backgrounds are already 19 months behind their better-off peers in school readiness?  One child in three leaves primary school unable to read to the level expected or their age and this rises to one in two from disadvantaged backgrounds. This compromises their future employability, health confidence and happiness.
