Story
Who is Sadaka?
Sadaka is a local charity in Reading that supports those in need
by providing hot meals, snacks, clothing and toiletries. They are run entirely by volunteers.
Since it was set up in 2017, Sadaka has served over 9,000 hot meals and an equal number of food bags plus other essentials to the local disadvantaged community.
Why raise funds for Sadaka?
In 2019, the estimated number of homeless people in Reading was a
staggering 593 (Reading Chronicle 2019).
Sadly, 2020 has amplified the number of people seeking support due
to financial hardship. With the Covid-19 global pandemic, hundreds of thousands have lost their jobs and face the frightening prospect of fulfilling their most basic needs of food and shelter with no income, made worse with the government’s furlough scheme ending soon (BBC 2020).
Sadaka relies on donations to purchase supplies and hot meals from
local restaurants, which is why they need our help!
How to Join Reading Students for Sadaka
Students may not be the wealthiest sector of society, but that
doesn’t mean we lack the power to raise funds for charity!
Students for Sadaka is an opportunity for us to get creative with our
own space and abilities, and ask friends and families to support us.
It costs £140 to provide hot meals on Sundays and £210 to provide hot meals on Saturdays. Can you set yourself the target of fundraising enough to provide hot meals for one day?
Covid-19 restrictions are still in place, so the challenge is to think outside the box to help Sadaka continue their vital work.
Could you livestream a bake-a-thon, DJ set, art project, or
dance-a-thon? Could you walk/run/cycle a 10K in your local community? Maybe you could hike Ben Nevis in your garden: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Heather-Blackhall4 ?
To join me in this challenge:
1. Go to Sadaka's JustGiving page (copy and paste: https://www.justgiving.com/sadaka)
2. Go to the ‘Fundraise for us’ button on the right-hand side of their page to create your own campaign where your friends and family can donate. Your campaign will be linked to Sadaka’s, and any funds raised will be presented on their campaign page.
