Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
The weekend of the August bank holiday this year, I climbed Ben Nevis in memory of my cousin, Kelly (pictured).
Two years ago, only a few months after her 30th birthday, Kelly passed away from developing the condition Sepsis, shortly following a Urinary Tract Infection.
UTI's being so common in women (it's estimated half of all women in the UK will have a UTI at least once in their life), it was so devastating that an infection so common and so easily treatable could lead to such a fatal condition.
Kelly was fun, bubbly, beautiful, loving and loyal. When she passed away we lost a daughter, sister, cousin, girlfriend, niece, carer and friend. Sepsis has left such a void in our lives which will never be filled, but knowing that someone else may be saved is somewhat comforting.
No one should lose a loved one to a condition which, if caught early can be treated.
Sepsis accounts for 37,000 deaths annually in the UK alone, that's more than Bowel Cancer, Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer combined.
This means that a person dies of Sepsis every 14 minutes, equivalent to the capacity of a Premier League stadium each year.
Your donation will pay for resources for educating and training GPs and Hospitals and the general public in swiftly detecting and treating the symptoms of the condition, knowledge which could have saved Kelly had the condition not gone undiagnosed.
For the trust and for Sepsis survivors, the challenge doesn't end in treatment. The condition can leave a patient with various physical and psychological side effects which require support.
Standing at 1,344 metres above sea level, Ben Nevis is the tallest Mountain in Britain and the climb was the most challenging activity i've ever taken part in - 5 gruelling hours to the summit (into a cloud!) and 3 hours back down, but Kelly was with me the whole way.
